How to prepare for baby as a FTM

Be prepared-ish with these things for baby during your pregnancy

Rest: Its important that you rest. When your baby comes you won’t be able to catch a lot of snoozes. You will miss these free days you have. Rest as much as you can. Find an excuse to.

Buy baby essentials: Begin buying these essentials as soon as you hear you are pregnant. Baby stuff is expensive. You will need stocks of different sized diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, bath products, bum cream, bottles, baby feeding essentials, toys, blankets, swaddle blankets and bibs. Get various clothes according to size; up to 3 months, up to 6 months and up to 12 months. You will also need a pram or push chair and baby wearing essentials such as a baby carrier. It also helps to buy teething products. Read here for baby must haves: https://mrschettylifestyle.co.za/baby-must-haves/

Buy grooming essentials and a medical aid kit for baby.

Premade snacks help during postpartum. I would get very hungry as I am breastfeeding. Healthy premade snacks are a bonus.

Nesting: Make your home baby safe, organize your house by putting your breakable valuables on higher shelves. Covering cables and open plugs. Consider changing glass tables. Cleaning up in corners. Clearing out your medicine cabinet. Putting harmful substances out of reach. I actually woke up at 2am to clean my house on my delivery day.

Organize baby room and buy baby room essentials: crib, deco, baby monitor, cloth drawers. That’s up to how you want your baby room to look like.

Read, research about baby: Buy baby books, google from hospitals online, ask questions at your doctors, get educational flyers from your doctors’ office. You learn a lot from research.

Connect with other moms: Join social media mom groups to connect with moms going through something similar. Connect with moms outside social media. Speak to your friends, cousins, mom, aunts, anyone who is a mom but be careful to filter advise given.

Date nights with Significant Other: Use this time to bond and spend more alone time with your significant other. Go on date nights too. Allow your partner to connect with others as well as research so that they will understand what’s going on with you. It makes those midnights run looking for your cravings much bearable for them.

Prepare hospital bags for mom, dad and baby. There are lots of checklists out there on what you need to pack for mom, dad and baby for the hospital.

Get things ready for postpartum: You may read about postpartum and what to expect. It is like a forth trimester on its own. Download your free postpartum checklist at the end of this post. You may have to deal with postpartum blues and depression. Its good to speak out and get help if you do.

Hospital visits: Make sure to find a doctor you will visit these months ahead. Don’t mis out on your appointments. They are important and your doctor makes sure your baby is growing best as much as they are capable of.

Personalized gift for baby: This is one thing I thought is beautiful but I didn’t do. It’s a personalized gift that you can make for your child and give them later in life maybe for a special occasion like a grandchilds’ birth. It also could be something they can use as a baby that you made like a baby blanket or hat with their name on it. Get creative with this one. There are lots of personalized blankets you may buy on etsy.

Pregnancy safe exercise: Find out from your doctor what safe pregnancy exercise you can do. As well as your pregnancy apps with approval from your doctor. I would take walks daily to help me.

Enjoy me-time: Your me-time comes to and end or is very scarce when you have a baby. Enjoy those free minutes to yourself. Soak in your favorite bath and just relax. You will miss it.

Sign up for free baby essentials from your medical aid, baby store etc. I got a wonderful bag full of baby essentials from Dischem. The picture below is all that I recieved. https://www.dischem.co.za/baby-programme

Save: Like I mentioned earlier a baby is costly. Save all you can. You may also start a savings account for your baby for college fees.

Arrange for help: After birth you will need to rest and concentrate on you healing and on the baby. You will need help with cooking, house chores and baby as well.

Eat healthy for the sake of your baby. Eat what is recommended by your doctor.

Install car seat: this is usually done in the third trimester.

Decide on a name: My sons name is Nathaniel Mapalo. It means God has given a blessing. Nathaniel means God has given and Mapalo means blessing. I personally feel a name paves way for your childs future. Please chose wisely.

Buy for mom: Breast pump, pads, maternity clothes and underwear, your cravings, a chair pillow if you sit a lot at your workplace. Extra pillows or a pregnancy pillow for your bed, it gets harder to find a comfortable position to sleep. If your doctor recommends pregnancy pills you should take them. I felt nauseas whenever I didn’t take my pills and they are good for your babies growth.

Consider who will take care of your baby if you go back to work or decide to be a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) https://mrschettylifestyle.co.za/reasons-to-become-a-sahm/

In conclusion: These are the things you should prepare for baby. Pregnancy is a blessing and a beautiful thing. Enjoy every moment. It is something that you can’t explain and is different for everyone. People will advise you but learn to filter this out. Plus being pregnant lets you get away from doing certain things. Your body is amazing to know what to do during pregnancy.

Be proud of it. You are strong and amazing. Seriously you are growing a human being inside you. That’s just amazing. And remember pregnancy, child birth and the stages after are unpredictable. Anything can happen. Most of all prepare your mind for anything. Don’t be stuck in one way only. Be flexible.

  1. Awesome tips! I think the “me-time” is one we totally forget! Life with baby is waaaaay different. Enjoy these last moments before you’re in a whole new ball game.

  2. Great tips! Research was key for me during pregnancy. I still had no idea what I was doing when baby got here. HA! My best tip is to read about baby sleep, especially as a FTM. One of my biggest mistakes was not knowing that the baby needed to sleep every 45 minutes. This threw us into a nightmare of sleepless nights until 7 months!
